How to Find a Part-Time Job

May 7, 2026

Working part-time while studying abroad helps you earn income, build local experience, and integrate into your new community. Here is how to get started.

1. Check Your Work Authorization

Before applying to jobs, confirm whether your visa allows you to work and how many hours per week are permitted. Many student visas allow 20 hours per week during term time.

2. Update Your CV for the Local Market

CV formats vary by country. Research the local format and tailor your CV accordingly. Keep it to 1-2 pages and highlight transferable skills.

3. Where to Look

Start with your university career center — they often have exclusive student job boards. Campus jobs (libraries, cafeterias, admin offices) are great first options.

4. Network Actively

Many jobs are never advertised. Attend career fairs, join student associations, and connect with professionals on LinkedIn. Referrals are extremely effective.

5. Prepare for Interviews

Research the company, practice common interview questions, and prepare examples using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result).

6. Balance Work and Studies

Your studies come first. Aim for no more than 15-20 hours of work per week during term. Block your schedule to ensure enough time for coursework and rest.
