Coping with Homesickness
Moving to a new country is exciting — but it can also be overwhelming. Feeling homesick is completely normal. Here are practical strategies to help you manage it.
1. Understand What You Are Feeling
Homesickness is your mind adjusting to change. It does not mean you are weak — it means you care about the people and places you have left behind. Give yourself permission to feel it.
2. Build a Routine
A daily routine provides structure and stability. Try to wake up and sleep at consistent times, eat regular meals, set small daily goals, and include physical activity.
3. Stay Connected — But Find Balance
Schedule regular video calls with family and friends back home. But also build new connections locally. Balance staying in touch with home while investing in your new life.
4. Explore and Get Involved
Treat your new city like a tourist would. Discover local neighborhoods, try new foods, join clubs or sports teams, and volunteer for causes you care about.
5. Be Kind to Yourself
Adjusting takes time — often 3 to 6 months. Celebrate small wins: finding a favorite coffee shop, making a new friend, having a conversation in the local language.
6. When to Seek Help
If homesickness is significantly affecting your daily life for more than a few weeks, speak to a counselor. Many universities offer free counseling services for international students.
